Should I Upgrade from GPT-4o-mini to GPT-4.1 Nano?

Hey everyone, I'm currently using the GPT-4o-mini for my SaaS and just received an email from OpenAI nudging me to upgrade to GPT-4.1. I'm confused because there are three models available right now: the base model is too pricey for my needs, the mini model actually costs more than GPT-4o-mini, and then there's the nano model, which is cheaper. I want to know about the performance differences since they haven't released clear benchmarks comparing 4o-mini to 4.1-nano. I'm leaning towards sticking with 4o-mini for now, but I'm worried about it potentially being deprecated in the future as I really like it!

Just to clarify, are you mixing up 4o-mini with o4-mini? That could lead to some confusion.

No confusion here, I know exactly what I'm talking about!

I hear you! It's a tough decision. I’ve been using 4o-mini for a while and its performance-to-price ratio has been fantastic. Even if the new models might offer slight improvements, I find the outputs can vary, and sometimes the original model performs better in certain ways.

Yeah, the performance of 4o-mini is surprisingly solid, much better than what you'd expect based on their benchmarks.

I think the best way to figure this out is to gather feedback from users who have tried both models. Depending on your specific needs, the nano could work out just fine for you.

What have your experiences with the nano been? What use cases did you test it for?
