Should I Upgrade from Ryzen 5950X to 9800X3D?

Hey everyone! I'm considering upgrading my CPU from a Ryzen 5950X to a 9800X3D, especially since there's a deal at Microcenter. My 5950X has been running hotter than normal; I'm sitting at around 50°C idle and reaching the high 60s to mid 70s under load, even with a 360mm AIO cooler and plenty of fans. I'm looking for a performance boost and hopefully lower temperatures with the new CPU. This whole upgrade is going to cost me about $800 total, which includes the new CPU, motherboard, and RAM. Is it worth making the switch, or should I just stick with my current setup? Here are my specs: 5950X, RTX 3080 STRIX, and 32GB RAM. Appreciate any insights!

I'd say go for the upgrade while that deal is on! The 5950X still has some resale value because AM4 isn't phased out yet, and X3D chips retain value better. You'll get a nice uplift in FPS, especially in the 1% lows, which can really improve gameplay. Plus, if you ever regret it, you can always downgrade later! Just be mindful if you're fully utilizing all 16 cores now.

I recently made this exact switch, and honestly, I feel like I wasted my cash. I went all out, upgrading everything except my GPU, and I haven't noticed a real performance boost in the game I play, DCS. Maybe you should think twice before spending all that money!

Switching for temperature reasons alone might not be the best idea. If your CPU isn’t hitting 90°C, I think you're in a good spot! Just make sure your cooler is doing its job, and you should be fine with the current setup.

Totally agree! But my 5950X still feels a bit too hot for comfort. Just wondering if the performance boost from the 9800X3D would make the upgrade worth it.

Honestly, your 5950X sounds like it's running just fine! Upgrading seems like a big expense just for temps, especially if you're not really unhappy with the performance. Unless you're really into future-proofing or you have the money to spare, I’d say just enjoy what you’ve got!

I get what you're saying, though I'd love my temps to be better too. But yeah, throwing $800 just for that might not be the smartest move.
