I'm considering upgrading my CPU and I've heard that x3d processors are particularly great for gaming. I've read that the 5800x3d is the most powerful option but seems hard to find. Can someone help me understand how the 7800x3d and 9800x3d compare to it? How much of a drop in performance should I expect if I go for one of those instead?

I recently upgraded from the 7600X to the 9800x3d and it was seamless! Just remember to update your BIOS if you're using a B650 or X670 motherboard. The extra cores make a significant difference, especially if you want to stream while gaming. My gameplay is way smoother now!
If you're already using a 7600x, you're on the AM5 platform, which means the 5800x3d isn't the way to go. It's actually on AM4 and not only is it harder to find but it's also not the best performance-wise anymore. The 7800x3d and 9800x3d are better options, with the 9800x3d being around 22% faster than the 5800x3d. Definitely consider one of those instead!
Honestly, don’t waste your time on the 5800x3d. If you can get the 7800x3d for better fps per dollar that’s the smart choice. If performance is what you’re after, the 9800x3d is your go-to. It’s just a better fit for your existing setup.
Totally agree with the other comments. The 5800x3d is old tech and hard to find as production has stopped, plus it’s on the older AM4 platform. If you’re gaming, you really should look at the 7800x3d for best value or the 9800x3d for top performance. You're in a great position sticking with AM5!

Got it! Just to be clear, I won’t need a new motherboard if I upgrade to either the 7800x3d or 9800x3d, right?
