I'm contemplating an upgrade for my CPU. Currently, I have an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, but I'm unsure how to determine if a newer CPU would be an improvement for my system. What should I consider?

Honestly, the 5950X is still an excellent CPU for your system, especially for gaming. Unless you're planning a full upgrade to AM5, which means changing your motherboard and RAM, I’d recommend sticking with your current setup.
The 5950X is pretty much the top choice for AM4 gaming, rivaling the 5800X3D. If you're really keen on upgrading, transitioning to AM5 is your path, but don't forget it also involves DDR5 RAM, which can add to your costs.
If you're aiming for better gaming performance, your best bet is to look for a second-hand AMD x3D chip. Otherwise, a complete upgrade to the AM5 platform would be necessary. Just keep in mind that AM5 typically requires DDR5 RAM too, which can be pricey.
I totally get your desire to upgrade, but honestly, there aren’t many good options unless you're thinking of going all in on a new PC build. If you’re not seeing any performance issues with your current setup, it might be wise to hold off for now.
