Should I upgrade my CPU or GPU first for better gaming performance?

Hey everyone! I built my PC back in 2020, and I'm feeling like it's time for an upgrade. I mainly play first-person shooters and a few single-player games. Recently, I tried playing BF6, and it seemed to run poorly. I'm not sure if that's due to the game, my rig, or a combination of both. Since I'm on a tight budget, I'm planning to upgrade my setup gradually. I'd really appreciate your advice on whether I should prioritize upgrading my CPU or GPU first.

Here are my current specs:

* MSI TOMAHAWK B450 MAX motherboard.
* 16GB DDR4-3200Hz Corsair Vengeance Pro (I have room for 2 more sticks).
* AMD R5-3600 CPU.
* GigaByte RTX 2060 6GB OC GPU.
* 750W Corsair PSU.
* 1TB SSD + 2TB HDD.

I'm also aware that hardware prices, especially for RAM and GPUs, have spiked significantly, at least in Europe. Back in 2020, I paid around €70 for 2 sticks of 8GB RAM, and now it's closer to €150. Thanks in advance for your help!

What graphics settings are you running in BF6? Your PC should meet the minimum requirements, but if you’re on the lowest settings and still struggling, it might be time for a GPU upgrade.

I usually set it to the lowest settings or even 'potato' mode to boost FPS. I’ve tried optimizing with NVIDIA's tool and even tinkered with various settings, but my FPS still fluctuates between 60 to 100 in different parts of the map.

What’s your budget looking like for upgrades? If you haven’t set one yet, it might be good to do that so you can narrow down your options.

I don’t have a specific budget in mind yet, as I need to figure out what parts actually need upgrading first.

I had a similar setup and upgraded to a Ryzen 5800x along with 32GB of RAM and a 7600xt GPU. It cost me around £500, and it's been great for the last few years. Given your current setup, if your budget allows, consider going for a newer CPU and GPU. Prices have cooled a bit, so you might find decent options out there. Just be careful with RAM prices—they’re still pretty high!
