Should I Upgrade My CPU or GPU for 1080p Gaming?

Hey everyone, I'm currently using a Radeon RX 6750 XT GPU and a Ryzen 5 8400 F CPU with 32GB of XPG Blade RAM (upgraded to CL30 6000MHz from two 16GB CL45 5600MHz kits). It's been a year since my last upgrade, and I'm curious about upgrading either my GPU or CPU. A technician suggested moving from the 8400 F to a 7600 X, but he mentioned the performance increase would only be around 10-15%. He also hinted that a more powerful option like the 7700 X or 7800 X3D might be held back by my GPU. With my current setup, do you think I should be upgrading my CPU or GPU now, or can I comfortably stick with what I have for 1080p gaming? I haven't upgraded to a 1440p monitor yet.

Your current rig is solid for 1080p at 144Hz—no issues there. The 6750 XT can manage some casual 1440p gaming with the right tweaks. As for the CPU, the 8400F isn’t fantastic, but the gains you get from upgrading depend mostly on the GPU’s capability to keep up. If you're already seeing max load on your GPU, then it might be time to think about an upgrade there.

If I decided to upgrade the CPU, which one would you suggest? Is it worth it now?

Honestly, get that 1440p monitor first! The 6750 XT can still handle that resolution pretty well, especially if you enable some settings like FSR for tougher games. You'll be surprised at the difference it makes for your gaming experience.

What specs should I look for in a good monitor? Any recommendations on refresh rates or features?

I wouldn't stress about the RAM upgrade during these crazy times! It's great you sold your old RAM at a good price. Consider saving up for a new GPU instead, and if you need more power in showing off the latest titles, that could be your next move. But for now, your setup seems to handle 1080p gaming quite well!

So, would you still recommend upgrading the CPU now or wait for better GPU options in the future?

For 1080p gaming, you're actually in a great spot with that RX 6750 XT! It's quite powerful for that resolution, so no urgent need for an upgrade. The tech was correct—moving from the 8400F to the 7600X would probably not give you much more than a slight bump. Plus, if you eventually get that 1440p monitor, reassess your setup then; you might find that you want to make changes depending on performance at that higher resolution!

If I do upgrade to a 1440p monitor later, will my current setup manage just fine?
