Should I Upgrade My CPU When Upgrading My GPU?

I'm considering upgrading my GPU since I've been nostalgic about playing COD BO3 and want to jump into BO7 soon. Right now, I have an AMD Ryzen 5 3500x paired with an Nvidia 960. I'm looking at getting either a 5060ti or 5070. My question is, do I also need to upgrade my CPU, or what performance issues might I face if I don't? I feel a bit lost on this upgrade path.

Upgrading your GPU is definitely going to give you a better gaming experience, but just keep in mind that you might not get the full performance out of your new GPU with the Ryzen 5 3500x. A small percentage of performance loss is pretty normal, though. If you're on a budget, consider second-hand options like the 5700XT or 3060 ti—they might give you a great balance of power and cost. But overall, you can start with just the GPU and then plan for a CPU upgrade later if you feel like you need it.

If you're planning to stick with your current system for a while, consider how tightly paired your components are. For a seamless upgrade and to get the most out of your hardware, trying to get a balanced system (CPU and GPU) is always best, but if cost is a factor, the GPU upgrade will definitely provide a noticeable difference. Save some cash for a better CPU later if you feel like you need it after the GPU upgrade.

Honestly, you probably won't need to upgrade your CPU for a decent performance jump with the 5060 TI. You’ll still see a nice increase in frame rates with your current setup. Just go for the GPU first, and if you notice a drops in performance later on, then consider upgrading the CPU.

While it's not strictly necessary to upgrade your CPU, it will definitely boost your gaming performance. Benchmarks suggest you'll see better results with a more powerful CPU, but since you're looking at GPUs that are a bit above what you have now, you'll still notice a significant improvement without making a CPU switch right away. Just take it one step at a time and see how your games run after getting the new GPU!
