My father and I built my PC about five years ago, and it's starting to struggle with newer AAA games. I'd like to play at 2560×1440, preferably on high or very high settings, and take advantage of my 144 Hz monitor. My current system has an Intel Core i7-10700K, an RTX 3070 8GB, an MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge WiFi motherboard, 32GB of DDR4 memory, an 850W Seasonic Focus power supply, and a 2TB SATA SSD. I also need to replace the case fans. My budget is roughly $2,000 USD. Would it make more sense to upgrade specific parts or replace the entire PC? If upgrading is best, which components should I prioritize, and should I save more money first?

You can reuse most of the existing build: the case, power supply, storage, and possibly the memory. If the new GPU still leaves you unhappy, then move to a newer CPU and motherboard platform. A modern platform using DDR5 would be the better long-term investment, but it also increases the cost because you’d need new RAM. Older DDR4-compatible platforms may save money, though they offer less upgrade potential.
A complete replacement doesn’t seem necessary with a $2,000 budget. Start with the GPU, since that’s what matters most when increasing image quality and frame rates at 1440p. Consider a full rebuild only if you also want very high competitive frame rates, your CPU is causing noticeable stuttering, or the new GPU doesn’t deliver the results you want. Waiting for newer CPU generations or better pricing is another option, but there’s no guarantee prices will drop soon.
For 1440p gaming, the graphics card is the main limitation, so I’d upgrade that first rather than replace the whole system. The 10700K is older, but it’s still capable enough for many games at this resolution. A current card with more VRAM, such as an RTX 5070 Ti or Radeon RX 9070 XT, would provide a substantial improvement. Your 850W power supply should be suitable, assuming it’s in good condition. You can also replace the fans now and reassess performance before spending on a new CPU and motherboard.
