I'm looking to upgrade my PC and need some advice on my options. I've got a solid AM4 setup with an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and a Palit RTX 3080 GPU, along with a decent amount of RAM. With current RAM prices shot up and potential GPU prices rising due to AI, I'm weighing two upgrade paths.
Option 1 is to stay with my AM4 platform and upgrade my GPU to a Sapphire Pure RX 9070 XT for around $842, while also bumping up my CPU to a Ryzen 5 5600 for $148, totaling about $990.
Option 2 is to make the leap to AM5, keeping my 3080 GPU but upgrading to a Ryzen 5 7600 CPU for $216 and a new motherboard, costing about $930 in total with RAM included.
I'm mainly gaming at 4K and 1440p ultrawide, and I'm worried about the VRAM on my 3080 for future games. I want to know which upgrade option would give me better performance overall and if either makes sense with the current price situation. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, I'd recommend going for the AM4 upgrade with the 9070 XT. The performance jump from a good GPU upgrade is usually more noticeable for gaming than just CPU improvements. The risk is always there with prices, but the 10GB VRAM should still carry you for a while if you don’t go too crazy with settings. And remember, you can always upgrade to AM5 down the line if you feel your CPU is holding you back.
You might want to consider just upgrading your CPU for now while sticking with the 3080. It’s still a solid graphics card, and delaying the GPU upgrade could save you some cash, especially since RAM prices are unpredictable. I recommend looking at getting at least a Ryzen 5 5700X or even the 5800X3D if you can find a good deal. It would give you a nice performance boost without completely changing platforms. Keep an eye on GPU prices, and upgrade the GPU when you really need it.
If you can find a good deal on the 9070 XT and maybe look for second-hand CPUs like the 5800X, that could be a really good option. Staying on AM4 keeps your setup stable, and you can allocate your budget towards a stronger GPU later when prices maybe even out. Just be cautious about prices, though. But yeah, it sounds like upgrading the GPU could be more beneficial in the long run for gaming at higher resolutions.
Definitely agree! The 3080 is still strong, but if you think it might bottleneck you in the future, then consider your options carefully. It’s hard to predict pricing fluctuations, though!

That sounds like a solid plan! I think the upgrade to the 5700X is smart since it’ll help with performance, and then you can save for a better GPU later. Plus, the current GPU market is a bit crazy, so waiting it out might be wise.
