I'm looking to make a decision about my NAS setup. Right now, I have an older NAS that includes a 3570k processor overclocked to 4.0GHz, a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H motherboard, 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, three 4TB Hitachi enterprise drives, and two 120GB SSDs for booting. While it handles my Jellyfin and Emby server needs, I can't ignore that the motherboard, CPU, and RAM are almost 14 years old. Recently, I upgraded my main PC and have a spare Asus TUF X570 WiFi Plus motherboard and Corsair 16GB 3200MHz DDR4 RAM, but no CPU to go with them. Should I invest in a budget-friendly 6-core AM4 CPU like the Ryzen 5 2600 to update my NAS, or would it be better to sell these spare parts instead?

Definitely upgrade the NAS! I'm in a similar boat with old hardware, but after swapping in a new CPU like the AMD 5500, it's been a game-changer for running my home lab, including Jellyfin and even a few game servers. If you have the time, consider switching to something like Proxmox for added flexibility. It’s worth it if you’re looking to expand.
I'd say go for the upgrade! Your current NAS is pretty outdated and while it might still work for now, you don’t want to be caught off guard when that old motherboard gives out. If you upgrade, you can ensure better performance and longevity for your setup.
