I built my current PC in 2022 with a Core i7-12700K, DDR4 memory, and an RTX 3080 10GB. It has handled most games well, but newer demanding releases are starting to expose its limits, especially at 4K on my OLED display. I'm mainly interested in single-player games and would be happy with roughly 90–120 FPS using DLSS where appropriate. I'm considering either replacing the GPU with an RTX 5070 Ti or spending around $3,000 on a prebuilt with an RTX 5080, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and 32GB of DDR5. Is the larger upgrade likely to provide meaningful long-term benefits, or would my current CPU, motherboard, and memory be fine with a GPU upgrade for several more years?

The biggest issue with the 3080 is likely the 10GB of VRAM rather than your CPU. A newer card with more VRAM can prevent texture and stuttering problems in demanding games. If you want a clearly noticeable jump and can afford it, the 5080 makes more sense than moving sideways to a smaller performance tier, but a 5070 Ti should still be a substantial upgrade.
At 4K, the GPU is doing most of the work, so your 12700K should still pair well with either a 5070 Ti or 5080. I’d upgrade the graphics card first and check whether your power supply needs replacing. Your DDR4 setup and 32GB of RAM aren’t an urgent problem, and you can save the money for a full platform upgrade later.
I’d avoid rebuilding the entire system just for the sake of having DDR5 and a newer processor. At 4K, the difference between your 12700K and a much newer gaming CPU will usually be smaller than the difference made by a stronger GPU. Upgrade the GPU now and revisit the CPU, motherboard, and memory in a few years when your current platform actually becomes the limiting factor.
Another reasonable route is to wait on the full rebuild, since your current system is still fairly capable. If you need more performance immediately, a GPU upgrade alone should carry you through several more years of single-player gaming. You could also consider a higher-end CPU upgrade on your existing platform, but it’s probably not necessary for a 4K-focused setup.
