Should I Upgrade to AM4 or Stick with LGA 1700?

I'm looking to upgrade my current setup from an Intel i3 12100F and an RX 580 with 16GB of DDR4 RAM. I'm considering two main options: should I invest in a Ryzen 7 5700X with a new AM4 motherboard, or should I look for a higher-end Intel CPU? I would also appreciate any thoughts on GPU options that can match RTX 3060 performance. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, if you’re not planning to switch to a newer generation, it might be a waste of money to get a new motherboard. Just stick with what you have!

You can get a much better performance upgrade by just upgrading the CPU on your existing LGA 1700 setup. Consider something like the i5-12600KF for solid performance without the need to switch platforms.

Thanks for the suggestion! Would that be enough for gaming at high settings?

Absolutely! The i5-12600KF performs really well, especially for gaming.

If you're gaming a lot, I’d go for the i7-12700K and maybe look into a used GTX 1080 Ti for graphics. Just be mindful of your 550W PSU—it might be a bit tight with a high-end GPU.

Thanks for the tip! What games do you think a setup like that would handle well?

It should handle most modern AAA titles fairly well as long as you keep your settings in check!

Stick with LGA 1700! AM4 is pretty much outdated at this point. Plus, you have great options available on your current platform, like the i7-12700K. It'll serve you well for a while longer.

A 12400F would actually deliver similar performance to the 5700X. If you’re keen on Intel, check that one out. Just make sure your PSU is strong enough for any of these upgrades!

Good point! I guess I need to check my PSU wattage.

550W should generally be fine, especially if you’re considering GPUs like the RX 6700XT or RTX 2080 Ti.
