Should I Upgrade to an RTX 3080 or Consider Other Options?

Hey everyone! I'm relatively new to building PCs but I've learned quite a bit over the past year. I have an Asus Rog Strix G10DK_G10DK that I purchased around six years ago. Recently, I upgraded the CPU to an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D, bumped up the RAM to 32GB, added a 4 TB SSD for storage, and switched to an Intel AX210NGW for WiFi. Currently, I've got an RTX 3060 as my GPU, but I've heard people say that the 3080 can fit into this system. I'm trying to figure out if upgrading to a 3080 is worth it or if there's a better option out there. Would other GPUs work with my setup, or would I need to upgrade my motherboard or case? Also, I should mention that I have a 500W PSU, which I realize might need upgrading. I enjoy playing various games, currently tackling Borderlands 4, Hell Divers 2, and Lies of P, and I'm getting mixed FPS results with them. I appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Honestly, the RTX 3080 is a bit outdated now. I’d suggest looking at newer cards with more VRAM and modern features like DLSS 4 or FSR 4 for similar pricing. What's your budget?

Thanks for the response! I’m not set on a budget yet since I’m still figuring out what’s compatible with my build. What would you recommend as the best or a more medium option?

How powerful is your PSU? A used RX 6800XT could be a solid choice, and you might even snag a 6900XT or 6950XT for the same price. Those cards perform exceptionally well! You might as well just go for a new GPU; compatibility shouldn’t be a huge issue here.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll check those out. I still need to look into the PSU though; I think it’s a bit weak.

As long as the GPU fits in your case and your PSU can handle the load, you can pretty much choose any GPU. Just pull off your case side panel and read the PSU label to know for sure.

Good to know! I’m glad there are options. Thanks!

The Asus G10DK comes with a 500W PSU, but the 3080 usually requires 750W. The good news is your PC has modular parts, allowing you to swap the PSU easily. I’m curious though, why are you focused on the 3080 specifically? There are newer 40 or 50 series cards available now! Plus, the G10DK case can get hot, so if you're sticking a high-end GPU in there, consider a better airflow case too.

Great points! I was fixated on the 3080 because I saw it mentioned in older posts about my model. This discussion is opening my eyes to better options. By the way, how hard would it be to move the components to a new case? I’d rate the difficulty of that task based on how annoying the antenna for my wifi was to reattach!

I couldn’t find solid info on your power supply, so it’s best to check it directly. A 750W PSU is recommended for a 3080. If you’re considering a newer card, think about the 5060 Ti, which needs at least a 600W PSU.
