Why Is Safari Using 96 GB of Storage on My MacBook Pro?

I have an M4 MacBook Pro and noticed that Safari is using around 96 GB of storage. That seems far too large for passwords and normal browsing data. Is there a way to find out what is taking up so much space and safely remove it? I have not regularly cleared my history or website data, and Safari may be synced with my iPhone. I'm worried about deleting something important or being signed out of websites. I also have not saved pages for offline reading.

A very large amount of Safari storage could include cached files or data carried over from an older Mac or synced browsing setup, rather than just passwords. First check the individual website data entries and the Mac’s Storage settings to see whether the space is actually attributed to Safari or to another category. If the Safari listing remains unusually large after clearing unnecessary data, restarting the Mac and checking again may help.

Check Safari’s website data list to see which sites are storing the most locally. In Safari, open Settings, go to Privacy, and choose Manage Website Data. You can remove data for individual sites, but doing so may sign you out or reset preferences on those sites. This list may not explain all 96 GB, but it’s a good place to start.

You can use Safari’s Clear History option to remove browsing history and related website data. Be aware that clearing it can affect website sessions and may sign you out, especially if Safari is syncing through iCloud. Your saved passwords should remain in Passwords/iCloud Keychain, but it’s still worth checking that they’re synced before deleting anything.
