Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to computers and have recently been trying to fix up my HP Pavilion 22bw desktop, which my mom used before me and is about 20 years old. It has 1.79 TB of storage, but I'm facing some major slowdowns. Every time I boot it up, the hard disk is maxed out at 100% and my memory hovers around 90-98%. I had a friend help clear some background processes, but that didn't change much. I've also tried disabling some settings, but I'm still stuck. I've been hearing a lot about HDDs vs. SSDs, and since I'm not very tech-savvy, I wanted some advice on whether switching to an SSD is a good idea. What should I consider if I decide to go for an SSD? Thanks in advance! 🙂

Since your desktop is probably too old for NVMe, a SATA SSD would be the best option for you. Just make sure to check if your computer has a SATA interface, as some older models might use IDE instead, which wouldn't work with an SSD. It should improve disk performance significantly!
Just a heads up, if your PC is 20 years old, it might struggle with modern operating systems even with an SSD. If you need more than 2TB, HDDs are cheaper for that. But for speed, SSDs are definitely the way to go! Make sure you check the full specs of your desktop before deciding.
I realize now that my desktop is 21.5 inches with an IPS LED Backlit Monitor. Guess it’s been a while since I looked into it!
Honestly, I still prefer HDDs for long-term storage since they give you more for your money. They're great for backups. But for your system disk, an SSD would definitely speed things up a lot! Just remember, wiping files off an HDD is easier than an SSD. Depending on what you need, you might want to weigh your options.
Thanks for the tips! I appreciate the help!
I asked a friend about my computer and found out it's got 8 GB of RAM. Sorry if that was a dumb question!
