Should I Use Manual Fan Speed or Zero RPM Mode on My Corsair RM1000x PSU?

I'm using a Corsair RM1000x power supply with my Ryzen 9800X3D and RTX 5080. This PSU has a feature for fan control, allowing either a manual speed setting or a Zero RPM mode. I prefer not to enable Zero RPM mode since I don't mind the fan noise and believe constant airflow is better for longevity. I've set the fan to run at 30% constantly. My question is: if I run heavy workloads like gaming or stress tests, or during hot summer days, will the PSU's fan speed automatically increase above 30% to manage temperature, or does this manual setting lock the fan speed unless it reaches thermal protection? In short, does manual fan control allow for thermal ramping, or is Zero RPM mode required for that? I'm considering if keeping the fan at a constant speed is safer or if enabling Zero RPM mode is better for the PSU's health and load handling. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

With Zero RPM mode, there'll be far less dust build-up in your case since the fan isn’t running all the time. Just something to consider!

When set to manual, you're just determining a minimum speed, and the fan will still ramp up as necessary according to temperature. Overall, I don't think the longevity of your PSU will be heavily impacted by the fan mode.

I'd recommend sticking to Zero RPM mode. You're focusing on the PSU's longevity, but you also need to think about the lifespan of the fan itself, which wears out faster. In Zero RPM mode, the fan will only activate when needed, minimizing wear. Plus, it should kick in when the PSU hits higher temperatures during heavy use, so you're not risking overheating.

Exactly! Many PSU brands have energy-saver modes like this. They’re designed to help the fan last longer while still managing heat effectively.

I just picked up this PSU myself and found your timing hilarious! Glad to see someone already asking the right questions before diving into usage. Can't wait to get mine set up.

For auto mode, it’s generally set to kick in at about 400-500W load. It might not ramp up right away, but setting a lower manual speed can help keep things cooler initially. Just remember, if it gets too hot, it will override your manual speed anyway. You can't really go wrong with either option, but leaving it on auto might extend the fan's lifespan since you won't be using it constantly.
