Should I wait for the new MacBook release or buy now to avoid RAM price spikes?

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a tough spot with my current laptop—it's practically on its last legs, and I'm considering making the switch to a MacBook. I've been hearing that the best time to buy is right after the new models come out, which would be in spring 2026 with the M5 processor. I'd like to hold off until then if possible, but I'm worried about the RAM shortage that people are talking about, which is causing prices to shoot up. So, my question is: should I buy an Apple MacBook now to avoid potential future price increases due to RAM shortages, or can I safely wait until the M4 models go on sale in March or April after the new M5s are released?

I totally get wanting to wait for the M5. That’s what I’m planning to do too for the latest tech! Just keep in mind that tech can change quickly, so prices might fluctuate after they release.

This may not be the answer you want, but if you're tight on cash, consider getting a secondhand laptop and installing Linux. As someone who enjoys tech, you might find it more rewarding than dealing with the constraints of a Mac. Just something to think about!

Micron is still selling chips to major companies like Apple, just not directly to consumers anymore. So, while there will be some impact on memory prices, Apple tends to handle these market swings pretty well. I wouldn’t stress too much about waiting. You might save a little money, but it’s not going to be substantial enough to deter your purchase if you need a laptop soon.

Just to clear things up, Micron isn't completely leaving the DRAM market. They're focusing more on fulfilling orders for companies, which could actually be a good thing for consumers since that means more chips are available for companies like Apple. So, in that sense, it could stabilize prices.

As a Mac enthusiast, I think Apple’s pricing strategy helps them manage such market fluctuations. Besides, even though you might get a slight price drop on last-gen models, it’s unlikely to be a deal changer. Plus, I noticed some Black Friday deals recently, but they were mostly on lower-end MacBooks, so keep that in mind!

RAM prices are indeed going to impact everything. If there is a significant market correction, memory prices could drop dramatically. If you're on a tight budget, you might want to hold off, but be prepared for some volatility with pricing. Just keep an eye out for any good deals!
