Should My Friend Choose the 5700X3D or the 7700X for His Upgrade?

A friend of mine has an AM4 setup with a Ryzen 5 3600 and is looking for some upgrade options. I was considering suggesting the 5700X3D since it can fit into his existing motherboard, but we also have a Microcenter nearby where the bundle for a 7700X is a really good deal. From what I've heard, their performance is quite close, with the 7700X being slightly slower in very cache-demanding games. What do you all think? He also has a 2080 Super GPU, so that might factor into the decision.

I'd go for the 7700X if your friend is ready to upgrade now. It's a great time to invest, especially with the bundle options.

I upgraded from a 3600 to the 5800X3D and noticed huge differences in CPU-intensive games. Just keep in mind that if he's looking for a long-term upgrade plan, jumping to AM5 could pay off in the future since it'll support newer tech for years to come. Does he want just immediate benefits or is he planning on future upgrades?

The 5700X3D is pretty much on par with the 7600X now, and while it was slightly faster before, recent updates have leveled the playing field. The 7700X actually performs a bit better in most games, making it a slightly better choice overall. Prices are rising for the 5700X3D, so if you can find one under $250, go for it, but the 7700X bundle is super tempting!

I'd recommend the 7700X bundle. It should be a solid setup for your friend's current needs and future upgrades, especially if he wants to switch to something like the 9800X3D down the line.

Honestly, the AM4 x3d CPUs were a solid choice when they were around $150 or $200, but now it makes more sense to go for a new platform, especially with the great Microcenter bundle available. The 7700X isn't noticeably slower at all; it has improved IPC and clock speeds, plus it supports DDR5, which is a big upgrade.
