Struggling to Land an Entry Level IT Job: What Gives?

I've sent out over 300 job applications and reached out to more than 100 recruiters, but shockingly, I haven't landed a single interview. I have over a year of military IT experience, a Secret security clearance, and a Security+ certification. I've applied for almost every entry level IT job I could find, yet I'm still hitting a wall. I've changed my resume multiple times in hopes of improving my chances, but nothing seems to work. I'm really at a loss and would appreciate any advice on what I might be doing wrong or how to improve my chances in this crowded job market.

It’s rough out there, especially since IT is becoming oversaturated. It feels like everyone and their dog is trying to get into tech because it's seen as a goldmine. Best bet is to find smaller companies who need support staff and actually offer you a chance to grow. Internships, even unpaid ones, could provide the experience you need to jump into a paid role later on.

I’ve been considering internships as well. Thanks!

Yeah, internships can be a great way to get your foot in the door.

The reality is that many companies are looking for more experienced candidates for even entry-level roles due to the sheer number of applicants. Even with certifications, it might be hard to stand out. If possible, try to get involved in some personal projects or volunteer work to show real experience; it often works better than paper certifications alone.

Will do! I think I could create some personal projects to showcase my skills.

Absolutely! Hands-on experience speaks volumes.

You're definitely not alone in this. The job market is really competitive right now, and there are tons of applicants vying for the same positions, often with years of experience. It might help to focus on niche roles or companies that specifically appreciate military backgrounds. Have you thought about looking into non-traditional routes like managed service providers? They often need entry-level support and value the skills you bring from your military experience.

That's interesting! I hadn't considered managed service providers. I'll definitely look into that.

Yeah, I think I'll expand my search that way.

Honestly, your resume might be getting lost in a sea of generic applications. Tailoring it to highlight your skills in a way that matches each job description can make a huge difference. Also, a personal touch can go a long way—don’t shy away from reaching out directly to small firms or even using LinkedIn to connect personally with recruiters. Networking can open doors that a dozen applications can’t.

I do need to customize my resume more! Great advice.

Yeah, and directly reaching out can sometimes get more attention than just applying online.

As someone in HR, I can tell you that many entry-level positions are flooded with resumes. You might be competing with candidates who have not only degrees but multiple internships. I recommend considering positions that require your clearance specifically, as they often have less competition. And don’t overlook government jobs; they can be a great stepping stone to gain experience while leveraging your military background.

TechWarrior29 -

I’ll definitely take a look at government job openings. Thanks for the tip!

Those can be great paths forward, especially with your clearance.
