I'd suggest downloading DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to completely wipe all your existing GPU drivers. After that, you can try a fresh manual install without the NVIDIA software. It worked wonders for me!
You can also visit the NVIDIA driver download page, type in your GTX 1080 Ti, and select the correct operating system version. Just download the driver directly and install it. This way, you bypass the app altogether.
