Struggling with NVIDIA on Linux – Is it worth switching to AMD?

Hey everyone! I'm considering moving from Windows to a Linux operating system, but I've heard some conflicting things about having an NVIDIA GPU, specifically my RTX 3060. I've been told that a lot of Linux distros might not support NVIDIA cards well and that AMD cards have better compatibility overall. I'm a bit hesitant about making the switch. Should I stick with my RTX, look for a better-supported Linux distro, or just switch to an AMD RX? What would you recommend?

Hold off on upgrading your GPU for now! NVIDIA actually open-sourced its drivers recently, which has made a big difference in compatibility. There will definitely be some trial and error with different Linux distributions, but there are several that support NVIDIA GPUs well.

Check out distros like Nobara or Bazzite; they have solid support for NVIDIA cards. Personally, I've had a great experience with the Fedora Mate spin while using an RTX 3060. You can always try it as a live USB before committing to a full installation.

You don’t need to worry as much as you think! NVIDIA has significantly improved their driver support for Linux lately, especially compared to the past. While there can still be some issues with DirectX 12 games, for most uses, your RTX 3060 should work just fine. If you're open to it, getting an AMD card might simplify things in the long run if you're focused on Linux, but if your 3060 is a good price, I wouldn't rush to upgrade just yet.
