Switching to Linux: Do I Need to Backup My Storage Drive?

I'm getting a new PC and I'm excited to ditch Windows for Linux! Currently, I'm on Windows 10. I have four disks: one is a ~250GB SSD (C) with Win10, a ~4TB HDD (G) for storage and games, another ~250GB SSD (E) for gaming, and a ~1TB SSD (F) also for gaming. Most of these drives are pretty full, but I'm thinking about deleting files on E or F to format one of them for Linux. I plan on keeping C as it is for potential Windows needs in the future.

Now, here's my main question: should I move and back up the files on G before formatting, or can I keep it as is? I'd rather just tackle everything at once and avoid future headaches. Also, does my overall plan sound reasonable?

You can definitely keep G as it is without formatting, but just be cautious! If there's any partitioning mishap, you could risk losing data, so it's wise to back up anything super important first. A smart move would be to unplug G during the installation to avoid any potential issues.

Can you explain more about Windows being picky with hardware changes?

I'm getting everything set up by pros, so I'm just preparing and funding the project!
