Thinking of Switching from Networking to DevOps — Need Some Advice

Hey everyone! Hope you had a fantastic Easter and got some well-deserved rest. I'm reaching out for some advice on my career path. I've been grinding away as a Cisco TAC engineer for about 5.5 years, primarily working with Software Defined Access (SDA). Unfortunately, Cisco just shut down the entire TAC in Belgium, so I'm at a crossroads. I'm contemplating whether to dive deeper into networking or pivot towards DevOps. My goal is to stay relevant in the job market and focus on tech that's not tied to a specific vendor and holds long-term potential. For those of you who've recently made the leap into DevOps, how's the experience been? Do you enjoy it? Would you make the same choice again? I really appreciate any insights you can provide!

Great question! How automated was your networking setup before? Understanding that can really help in your transition. From my experience, switching from traditional data centers to DevOps wasn't too bad since I've been able to apply a lot of what I already knew.

DevOps really involves a mix of everything—development, operating systems, networking, and a ton of various tools that keep changing. If you're up for learning something new every day, I say go for it!

You know, a lot of DevOps folks tend to lack solid networking skills, so your experience could be a huge advantage if you move to DevOps. If you really want to avoid being vendor locked, I'd say go for it! Just keep in mind that switching to DevOps means you'll have to learn a ton of new technologies and tools, which can feel overwhelming at times.
