Tips for Working as a Sysadmin with an Injured Hand

I recently broke my hand while on vacation and now have it in a splint. With an upcoming appointment for a proper cast, I'm facing a potentially long recovery period. Since I work from home as a sysadmin, I'm looking for advice on how to manage my work duties effectively while still dealing with this injury. Any tips on how I can make this work with one hand?

Working with one hand is definitely doable, even if it’s a bit slower. If it’s your dominant hand that's injured, you might find this a good chance to use your non-dominant hand more. It's not a bad skill to practice!

Yeah, my right hand is out of commission. I’m hoping the new cast gives me some flexibility to type a bit better, but I’ve switched to using my left hand for the mouse already.

Practicing to do tasks with both hands can be super useful, especially if you’re ever without one. I’ve been using a left-handed mouse for a while now, and it really helped me balance the workload and avoid strain. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

That’s a smart approach! Definitely something I’ll think about moving forward.

I had a similar experience with a broken wrist, and while it was challenging, I managed just fine working one-handed. It's all about adjusting your workflow and finding a pace that works for now. You got this!

I haven't broken anything since 2001, so this is a new challenge for me. Trying to adapt to using just one hand.

It's great that you're working from home; that should make things a bit easier. I suggest getting a doctor's note that outlines your restrictions and sharing that with HR. They might help you adjust your workload or give you some time off if you’re struggling. Just remember to prioritize your recovery—work will be there when you're ready to return!

I'm not on any medications, which is nice! I will definitely talk to my doctor, but with a busy period coming up, I think I’ll just have to adapt and work one-handed for now.
