Tracking Carbon Footprint in Atlassian: Anyone Have Insights?

I've recently been tasked with helping my company become more sustainable, which involves tracking our CO2 emissions. While platforms like Microsoft offer solid support for this, we're struggling with Atlassian. The only tool we've found so far is a Jira plugin called Sustainian that claims to track carbon footprints. I'm worried about security and how exactly Sustainian handles our Jira data. Do they export it or process it locally? I'd rather avoid reaching out to the plugin creators directly. I'm looking for advice on the following: Are there other trusted methods for tracking our carbon footprint in Atlassian that I might have overlooked? Can anyone share insights on how Sustainian manages Jira data? Any other experiences with managing this within the Atlassian ecosystem would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

Using Jira tickets for tracking emissions is probably not the best route. True tracking should be based on actual power usage and other environmental factors, which is usually managed by facilities. If you have a facilities management team, they should handle this. Establishing proper systems will require investment and more than just IT involvement to be successful.

Have you checked if your facilities already track things like electricity usage? I think it's really the project owner's job to determine how and where we track CO2 data. It may not even be your responsibility to gather this data directly.

That's a good point. It seems like this should fall more under facilities rather than just software management.

Typically, plugins like Sustainian might export data to their servers and perform calculations there. There are definitely valid concerns about security. My team actually chose a SaaS provider that specializes in emissions tracking and got a contract to ensure their handling of our data was secure.

Thanks for the advice! I think looking into a SaaS solution might be the way to go.
