Transitioning from QuickBooks: Seeking Alternatives and Hosting Solutions

I'm fairly new as an IT Manager at a small business that operates a mechanical and specialty vehicle shop with around 100 employees. Currently, we're using QuickBooks on-premises for our accounting needs, which is working fine for now. However, the company file has grown to 2.6 GB, and I know we need to look for alternatives as we can't rely on QuickBooks forever. The head accountant is very familiar with QuickBooks, but we might want to transition to something more robust. We're also looking to reduce our reliance on a local server since right now, it mainly hosts QuickBooks and file storage. I don't have much experience with accounting software migrations, and if the need arises, I'll need to guide my team on potential replacements. Do you have suggestions for alternatives to QuickBooks? Also, if a switch isn't feasible yet, what's the best way to host QuickBooks effectively? I'm hearing about options like Azure Desktop through Nerdio. Any insights would be appreciated!

From my experience in this field, QuickBooks tends to fall short once you surpass around $2 million in revenue. A few alternatives to consider are Acumatica, Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, and Sage products like Sage 100 or Sage 500. If you need more than just finance software—such as inventory management or bills of materials—make sure to write down your core requirements first. This isn't just a tech issue; it involves communicating with various stakeholders in your business to ensure everything flows smoothly.

My top tip? Definitely consult your accountant, whether they're part of the team or an external advisor. If things don't go well during the transition, the feedback will likely come back to you, especially since you're new in your role. Getting input from someone experienced in accounting can save you a lot of headaches down the line.

We've been using Rightworks for hosting QuickBooks for about 8-10 years without any issues. It's reliable and allows remote access for various team members, so it’s worth considering for your needs.
