Trouble Initializing a Refurbished 12TB HDD – What Should I Do?

Hey everyone,

I recently purchased a refurbished 12TB Seagate Enterprise Capacity v7 hard drive (model ST12000NM0127) to install in my PC, but I'm having some major issues. I've double-checked the power and SATA cables, trying all four SATA ports on my MSI B760 GAMING PLUS WIFI motherboard, yet the BIOS isn't recognizing the new drive.

Unfortunately, it's also making my PC boot up slower by about 30 seconds, and there's this whirring noise during startup. CrystalDisk isn't able to detect the drive either, and Disk Management just shows "Disk 0, unknown, uninitialized." When I attempt to initialize it through the Disk Manager, I get an "incorrect function error."

One thing I noticed is that the power cable for the HDD has multiple plugs, where only one is actually connected. Could that be causing the issue? Am I dealing with a faulty disk here, or is there something else I can try?

Thanks in advance!

Definitely look into returning it. The symptoms you've described are typically signs of a drive that isn’t functioning right. If you're seeing those errors, it’s highly likely you've received a faulty unit.

I'd suggest you start a return or replacement process. If it’s a refurbished Seagate drive, they are usually pretty good about swapping it out without much hassle. It seems like your drive isn’t functioning as it should.

You might want to try installing CrystalDiskInfo to see if it can read the SMART data from the drive, but honestly, it sounds like you may have gotten a bad drive. If the drive isn’t detected, it’s a strong indicator that it’s not working properly. Good luck!
