Trouble with an Erratic Touchpad on My ASUS Laptop

I've recently been having serious issues with the touchpad on my ASUS Vivobook Pro 16X OLED, which I bought in late 2022. Since the start of 2025, the battery has been draining quickly and no longer holds a charge, but the touchpad problems are even more frustrating. At times, the pointer won't move at all, or it jumps around wildly on the screen. It sometimes zooms in unexpectedly and is generally very inaccurate, making it hard for me to work efficiently.

I took it to an ASUS certified repair shop where they replaced the battery and cleaned the laptop, but the touchpad still acts up. I thought the battery issue might be the cause of the touchpad problems, but it's not. I tried cleaning the surface of the touchpad with isopropyl alcohol, which helped briefly, but the issues returned.

My laptop specs are as follows: it has an 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 processor, 16 GB of memory, and runs on Ubuntu 25.04. I've even used `sudo libinput debug-gui` and noticed registers for ghost touches and missed inputs. Is there anything I can try before considering a touchpad replacement? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you might want to start with reinstalling the touchpad drivers. Sometimes outdated or corrupted drivers can cause erratic behavior. Just download the drivers from the official ASUS site, reinstall them, and see if that fixes the issue. Make sure to reboot afterward, as that often helps. Good luck!

I tried that method, and it seemed to improve the situation a bit, but I'm not sure if it will last. I'll keep an eye on it for now!

Have you thought about trying a live version of Linux? You could flash an image onto a USB stick and boot from that to check if the touchpad issues are related to your current software setup. It might help in diagnosing the problem without installing any new software on your machine.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea! I’ll see how the driver reinstall goes first, but I'll definitely keep that in mind as a next step.
