Troubles After Upgrading to Ryzen 7 5700: Why So Slow and Missing Cores?

I recently upgraded my PC by installing a Ryzen 7 5700, replacing the old Ryzen 5 2600. Initially, everything seemed to go smoothly, including a motherboard BIOS update. However, I'm facing some major issues now. Booting up takes an incredibly long time, and once it finally boots, the system is extremely laggy for several minutes. I checked the Task Manager, and while it correctly identifies the new CPU, it's only showing 3 cores and 6 threads instead of the expected 8 cores and 16 threads. I'm feeling stuck and could really use some advice on how to resolve this.

Have you tried loading the optimal defaults in the BIOS? It's quite possible that some settings limiting your CPU got turned on during the update. When I upgraded from a Ryzen 5 1600 to a 5700X, it took me a few boot cycles to sort things out since the BIOS settings weren’t what I originally set them to.

Just a quick update: After some personal troubleshooting, I found out that the issue with the CPU displaying the wrong number of cores and threads was due to a problem in the msconfig. Fixing that resolved my issue!

Where did you purchase your Ryzen 7 5700? You might want to use CPU-Z to verify that it’s really a Ryzen 7 5700. There was a case where someone thought they bought an Intel i7 but received a Celeron instead due to a mix-up. Also, consider that the CPU might be damaged; I had a similar issue with a different Intel CPU showing incorrect core counts.

Did you update the BIOS before or after you installed the new CPU? Just double-check to make sure you haven’t accidentally turned on a ‘game mode’ in the BIOS. Sometimes you might need to put your old CPU back in and do another BIOS update if it wasn't done correctly before. That could definitely be the issue here.
