Two 2TB SSDs vs. One 4TB SSD: What’s Better?

I'm upgrading my PC from an old 1TB SSD to potentially an M.2 SSD, but I'm stuck on whether I should go for two 2TB SSDs or just one 4TB SSD. My motherboard supports either option, and I'm considering how best to manage my OS and files. I want to make sure I have enough storage and a solid backup plan, especially since I have some old drives I'll be cleaning up to back things up. What do you all think? Is there a clear advantage to one way over the other?

A larger single SSD is usually the simpler way to go. You don't need to worry about managing files across multiple drives, and it's usually more cost-effective. I understand the appeal of separate drives for organization, but many users find having everything centralized just makes life easier.

To me, having multiple drives just adds unnecessary complexity. If your primary concern is data safety, set up a robust backup system instead, like local backups with an external HDD or using cloud services. A single 4TB SSD should handle everything without issues.

I vote for one 4TB SSD! It's generally easier to manage everything on one drive, and you'll save some cash too. The performance between RAID setups and a single SSD often isn't worth the hassle unless you have specific needs.

Honestly, going with a single larger SSD is typically better unless you’re really trying to save on costs. It's simpler and provides better performance since you can put that larger SSD in the fastest PCIe slot for maximum speed. Plus, if you ever need more storage, you can always add a second later if required.

While having two drives offers some redundancy, for most casual users, one 4TB SSD meets the needs without the complexity. You won't lose your OS or data if you organize your backups well, like keeping critical files on cloud storage.
