Hey everyone, my son is eager to play games like Apex Legends at 120FPS on 1440p, along with other titles like Overwatch, Genshin Impact, Roblox, and Dead by Daylight. However, his current setup struggles with performance—especially with Apex that often won't run at all. Right now, he has a Stone Citadel Gaming PC equipped with an Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM, a 500GB SSD, and an Nvidia GTX 980. I'm unsure if I need to provide more specifics about the current machine. I'm willing to replace parts, but I could really use some advice on modern graphics cards, resolutions, and what we should do next. Thanks for your help!

If your i7 is from around the 6th or 7th generation, it's probably time for a complete rebuild rather than just upgrading. Those older components just can't keep up with modern gaming demands.

You'll definitely need a new GPU at the bare minimum. Consider getting a mid-range card like the RX 9060XT 16GB, RX 9070, or RTX 5070 for solid 1440p gaming. But given your current GPU's age, you might want to upgrade the CPU, motherboard, and RAM as well. Also, just a heads up, keep an eye on Roblox; there have been concerns about safety on that platform.

It’s important to know what generation the i7 is, as that will affect any decisions. If it’s older, building fresh is your best bet!

Thanks, everyone! I guess I was worried I'd have to do an upgrade instead of a full build. I'll definitely explore getting a prebuilt now as suggested. I really appreciate all the input!

You might want to look for a used prebuilt PC on marketplaces. I recently got a solid prebuilt with an i5-14600kf, 32GB RAM, and RTX 4060 for about $600. It’s a great way to get a decent system without spending a fortune. Plus, you can sell off old parts to help cover costs!

Honestly, it sounds like it's new PC time. The issues you're facing indicate the system is pretty outdated. Starting fresh would likely offer the best performance.
