Hey everyone! I'm looking for some advice on upgrading my gaming PC that I built about nine years ago, using some hand-me-down parts from my older brother. Here's a list of my current setup:
- **CPU**: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
- **CPU Cooler**: Noctua NH-D15 82.5 CFM
- **Motherboard**: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7
- **Memory**: G.SKILL Trident Z RGB 32GB 3200MHz DDR4
- **Storage**: Samsung 870 EVO SATA
- **Video Card**: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 8GB
- **Case**: Fractal Design Define S
- **Power Supply**: EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 1300W
I'm mostly using this PC for gaming, particularly MMOs and MOBAs. I'd like to know if it's worth upgrading the CPU and motherboard or should I consider upgrading the RAM to DDR5? I don't want to touch the GPU since it still performs well for my games. I'm looking to stick to a budget of around $1000. Any suggestions?

I would say your CPU and motherboard are the main components that need upgrading. Everything else looks pretty solid! The 3070 Ti is still a great card, and your 1300W PSU can handle stronger parts. If you upgrade to a new motherboard and CPU, keep in mind you'll need new RAM as well since DDR5 is becoming the norm now. If you have some leftover budget, consider adding more storage or potentially a GPU upgrade down the line, but I’d focus on the CPU and motherboard for now.
Honestly, upgrading is going to feel like building a new PC again. If you want to stick with your old RAM, go for an AMD AM4 setup with a Ryzen 5700X or 5800X3D, paired with a B550 or X570 motherboard. If you want to switch to a DDR5 platform, the Ryzen 9600X or 9700X with a B850 board would be great. Just make sure to get RAM that is at least CL 30 and 6000MHz speed for optimal performance!
If you can find a Ryzen 5700X3D and a B550 board, that could be a solid combo! The 3070 Ti should still be fine for most games, though some newer titles might struggle with the 8GB VRAM. Upgrading your CPU is really important; make sure that’s your priority.
If I get a new motherboard, can I still use my old RAM?
