Hey everyone! I'm working with a friend on fixing up his used PC because it's been overheating lately. When I set it up, I replaced the thermal paste since the last owner hadn't done it in years, which did help lower the temps a bit, but the overheating issues have gotten worse since then.
Originally, the case wasn't a fan favorite and was set to be replaced anyway, plus the fans are super loud, so that's definitely on the list too. We've already cleaned it up and reinstalled Windows.
We've been tossing around ideas like delidding the CPU for new thermal interface material, swapping out the AIO cooler, getting a new case, and of course, putting fresh thermal paste on everything.
So, I'm curious: when picking a new case, does the motherboard type affect compatibility? I've noticed that the choice of case often determines what AIO or coolers people go for, so I want to make sure we're on the right path and not overthinking things.
Here are the specs we're working with:
i7 6700k
Corsair AIO
3060 ti
Thanks for your help!

If that AIO cooler has been with the system since it was built, it's probably close to 9 years old, which means it's likely time for a replacement. I’d suggest going for a good air cooler instead, like the Thermalright Phantom Spirit. That way, you won't have to worry about how to mount it when you switch cases!
I get why you'd want to stick with liquid cooling for its cool factor, but going to air cooling isn’t going backwards at all; it's often more reliable. About overclocking, good air coolers can handle it pretty well, but it depends on how extreme you want your overclocking to be. Thanks for your advice!
