Upgrading from iPhone 14 Pro to 17 Pro and Data Transfer Trouble

I'm having a frustrating time with my recent upgrade from an iPhone 14 Pro to a 17 Pro, especially with how my data was transferred. Pro tip: if you're planning to get your data transferred, be there in person! I let a Verizon worker handle the transfer while I was away, and my mom was present instead. Big mistake! They tried a direct phone-to-phone transfer but ran into issues because I have 'stolen iPhone protection with Face ID' activated. Instead, the worker opted for an iCloud backup, which I wasn't thrilled about since I prefer not to use iCloud. They upgraded my iCloud to 200GB (with my mom's permission) and began the backup process while syncing my photos and messages. Unfortunately, when I showed up, the backup was canceled, and the worker tried the phone-to-phone transfer again but it only partially worked. I ended up getting my new phone back with apps, notes, and contacts mostly transferred, but not my messages or a significant portion of my photos. I've spent hours trying to sync messages to iCloud and download them to the new phone, but many are missing, and photo attachments are nowhere to be found. Plus, I have Google Photos backing things up, and I'm worried about potential conflicts between iCloud and Google Photos if I delete anything. Should I factory reset the 17 Pro and try the transfer again, or would that risk losing something important? Can anyone help?

Great news on your transfer! Sometimes, it just takes a little time for everything to sync correctly. If you stick with iCloud, just let it do its thing in the background; it usually sorts itself out. The issue with two services could lead to duplicated items, but keeping an eye on it should help. You might eventually decide to choose one storage service for peace of mind. Make sure to disable any sync features that confuse you!

I did read that an iCloud backup excludes data that's already synced to iCloud. So if your photos and messages were syncing when the worker attempted the transfer, that might explain the incomplete transfer. It’s tricky when you're using both iCloud and Google Photos together—just be careful when deleting items to avoid accidental loss!

It sounds like a real headache! Honestly, if you were fine without iCloud in the past, I wouldn’t say you should feel forced into it now. These issues typically come up when using both iCloud and Google Photos. If you think a reset might help, it's worth a try, but make sure your important data is backed up elsewhere first. Maybe consider sticking to one service to avoid complications?

Totally agree! Having both services active can definitely lead to confusion. I’d suggest backing everything up offline too—just in case. And if you do reset, just try the phone-to-phone transfer again to see if you get better results.
