Hey folks! I'm in the process of upgrading my computer to eventually run Windows 11, preferably with a debloated setup through Rufus. Right now, I'm focused on getting my new components (B650 Gaming X AX V2, G Skill Flare 32GB DDR5, and Ryzen 7 7700X) to boot the existing Windows 10 installation on my SSD.
I've had some trouble, as it doesn't seem to be a straightforward process. I can access the BIOS and have updated it to the latest version, plus I've set the boot order to prioritize my SSD. However, during the next restart, I get hit with a 'Disk Read Error.' The SATA cable connecting my motherboard to the SSD is secure, though it's not the same cable I used with my previous Intel setup (Z97 Fatality with an i7-4790K). I reverted back to the old setup and it boots into Windows without issues. I've even made a recovery USB for this Win10 installation just in case.
I'm a bit puzzled why it won't boot with the new parts. Is the switch from an Intel to an AMD CPU significant enough to cause this issue? What should I do next?

Make sure to check the drive settings on your Z97 board. If it's set to IDE or RAID mode, it may not work correctly with your new B650 board, which likely defaults to AHCI. If everything else fails, consider doing a fresh install of Windows—especially since you’re upgrading from a really old SATA drive; it could benefit from a new SSD too!
It sounds like your old drive might be using the MBR partition style, which could be causing problems if your new B650 motherboard doesn’t support that. Check your BIOS settings and enable legacy boot support. You might also need to ensure it’s set up for GPT when installing Windows 10.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll look into that. Fresh installs seem daunting but might be the way to go.
