Upgrading My Monitor: What Specs Should I Focus On and Any Recommendations?

Hey folks! I've been using a pretty basic 1080p monitor for work, but my workplace just hooked me up with a Dell P3223DE, which has a 32-inch screen at 1440p with a 60Hz refresh rate. My personal rig recently got an upgrade too—I've got an Intel i7-14700 processor, a 4080 Super GPU, and 32GB of RAM.

Now, I've got the upgrade itch! Currently, I'm using a dual-monitor setup with vertical 1080p screens. I'm thinking about getting a dedicated gaming monitor to pair with my new 32-inch work monitor. I'm debating whether I should: 1) stick with my current Dell monitor, since 60Hz is okay for me, 2) get another 1440p monitor with a higher refresh rate (between 165Hz to 240Hz), or 3) go all out and get a 4K monitor, whether that be 60Hz or 120Hz.

Plus, should I steer clear of OLED technology? I'm using these monitors for 50+ hours a week for work, plus gaming. I need to share screens often for demos, so multiple monitors are essential.

By the way, I've also got an Xbox X and a Switch 2 that I'd like to connect at some point, but it's not crucial since they can stay hooked up to my TV. I mostly play RPGs like Expedition 33 or Diablo, along with shooters like Borderlands and Far Cry, and I enjoy retro gaming through Emulation Station with black frame insertion.

My budget is flexible—I want something that will last me for around 6 to 7 years and is worth the investment, ideally between $400 and $800. I'm just feeling overwhelmed by all the opinions out there on YouTube. Thanks for reading, and I appreciate any advice you can share!

If you're planning on using your monitors for extended periods, especially with static images, it's better to pass on OLED to avoid burn-in. You seem fine with 60Hz if you're not playing competitively. High refresh rates really shine in fast-paced games. For 32 inches, I’d recommend leaning towards a 4K display since it will provide a sharper image and greater detail, especially for story-driven games. A 4K monitor will give you a better picture, and for your usage, a 60Hz refresh rate could be totally sufficient. Remember, IPS panels are great too, but consider VA panels for deeper blacks!

Thanks for clarifying that! I've heard about VA panels but don't know much about them. What's the difference between VA and IPS, and should I prioritize one over the other?

I think the concerns about OLED burn-in have improved, but it's still a factor for your use case. A high refresh rate monitor is definitely a good investment; the jump from 60Hz to 165Hz is substantial. It can elevate your gaming experience, and once you're used to it, you might find it hard to go back to lower refresh rates!

I totally get that! I'm nervous about missing out on that smoothness once I up my refresh rate. I'm leaning towards improving my setup for sure.

Given your GPU power, I suggest shooting for a 1440p. Just be cautious of OLED with long usage times—burn-in is still a concern. I recommend checking out "Monitors Unboxed" on YouTube. They've been doing long-term burn-in tests on OLED screens and have solid recommendations too!

Thanks! I'll definitely check that channel. My worry is investing in a 4K screen without being able to hit 120Hz, considering my current performance. I’d hate to settle for 1440p without improving my refresh rate!
