I've built my PC on a tight budget using some second-hand parts just to run drone simulations, which require minimal specs. However, I've started gaming more, particularly Apex Legends, and I'm looking to enhance my performance. Right now, I'm averaging around 80-90fps, but performance dips significantly on certain maps and during intense fights. My setup includes an i7-4790 and a 1650 Super on a 3440 x 1440 160Hz monitor, and I would love to hit 144fps or higher. I'm wondering if a CPU upgrade is the first step, and if so, what's the best value option out there? Would I need a new motherboard for a CPU upgrade, or is there a compatible alternative? After addressing the CPU, what would be a cost-effective GPU upgrade? Also, I'd like to be able to run Battlefield 6, though that's not my primary concern.

With your current setup, the GPU is likely the weakest link, especially at that high resolution. Since your motherboard supports the 4th gen i7, you're pretty much maxed out on CPU options without switching to a new motherboard. If you do upgrade, consider the Ryzen 5 7600 with a B650 or B850 motherboard and some DDR5 RAM for the best performance. For GPUs, something like the Radeon 6600 XT could provide a solid boost too!
Yeah, I totally agree! Switching the GPU should make a significant difference in your FPS, especially at 3440x1440.
