Upgrading vs. Replacing My 15-Year-Old PC: What Should I Do?

I have an old PC that's about 15 years old. Recently, I tried playing a game, but it wouldn't even launch. Should I consider upgrading this machine or is it time to invest in a new one? I still have a glimmer of hope that there's a secret way to improve it. Also, I've heard that prices for new parts are high; is that true or just hype?

Upgrading a 15-year-old system isn't really feasible. Prices for RAM and SSDs are pretty tough now, but if you buy used, you can still put together a decent system without breaking the bank. If you just want something functional, consider building an AM4 system with DDR4 RAM; it should be affordable and work for simple games.

That's helpful! I'm looking for something that can run older classics like Dragon Age: Origins and Heroes of Might and Magic III. I definitely want to try newer games too, but my current PC just can't keep up.

Putting any money into a PC that old isn't worth it. If you're looking for something that can handle modern games, you're probably looking at around $1000 USD for a decent setup.

Got it, that's good to know. I’ll use that as a saving goal.

Honestly, a 15-year-old PC has probably hit its upgrade limit. You might be able to toss in an SSD and a budget GPU, but with its aging CPU, it'll still struggle to keep up with modern games. Better to save your cash for a new build. Prices are a bit high lately, but if you shop smart, like looking for used parts, you can still snag a good deal.

Thanks! Looks like I'll need to start saving.

Can you share your specs? What's your CPU, GPU, and how much RAM do you have?

I can't recall everything, but I think it’s 8GB RAM with a 4GB GPU, and an Intel i5 of some sort.

You might be able to revive it a bit, but if it has less than 16GB of RAM, it's probably not worth the hassle. There are limitations with pushing older hardware, especially if you're not into retro games. You might be better off looking for a mid-range gaming laptop.

Yeah, it’s only got 8GB of RAM. I do enjoy old games mostly, but I want to try new editions sometimes. It feels like my PC is lacking in so many areas.
