What Are Others Moving to Instead of VMWare?

I'm curious to know what alternatives people are choosing as they move away from VMWare. I'm thinking about switching to Hyper-V, but I'd love to hear what options others are considering or have successfully implemented. Any insights on the transition or experiences with different hypervisors would be really helpful!

For those looking at future-proofing, think about containerization. Openshift is a bit pricey, but there are other options like Harvester and OKD that are worth exploring. The learning curve can be steep, but it could save you money in the long run!

Actually, I’m moving in the opposite direction! We tried Nutanix, and honestly, it was a nightmare with super high renewals and disappointing performance. We ended up keeping a small VMware setup, which I have to say, was the only solution that really worked smoothly for us. If you're going for Hyper-V, be prepared for multiple management tools—it's a bit messy compared to vCenter. And whatever you do, steer clear of S2D; it was a major headache for us!

I feel you on that! We had a disaster with S2D too. Background performance was just terrible during maintenance. For us, VMware has consistently been reliable in terms of performance.

Thanks for the heads up about S2D! It's good to know what to avoid.

If you're trying to reuse existing hardware, go for Hyper-V if you already have a datacenter license for Windows. Otherwise, consider Proxmox or XCP-NG. If you plan to invest in a whole new stack, Nutanix is an option, but just be aware that it can get pricey quickly!

Yeah, I’ve heard good things about Proxmox! It's great for light workloads, but I wonder if it holds up under heavy use.
