What Are Some Tips for Starting My First Sysadmin Job?

I'm about to start my first Sysadmin job next month in the UK and I'm really excited! I've managed to pass the CompTIA A+ certification recently, and while I'm still pretty new at this, I really want to learn more on the job. They use some advanced APM software like Splunk and Dynatrace, so I'm looking for any beginner-friendly resources or videos that can help me get started with those tools. Also, I came across 'Powershell for Lunches' and wondered if that's still a valid resource for learning automation, even though the video series is a bit older. Is there a better, more up-to-date alternative?

The best way to learn is by doing! Once you start your job, try to dive into writing your own scripts and creating little automations. After you've settled in, using PowerShell to make automated installers for software and drivers can really simplify your workflow. Check out PSADT for building installers when you’re ready. But first, get comfortable with the basics of PowerShell before jumping into that.

I hadn't heard of PSADT before; that sounds super helpful! I'm still getting the hang of PowerShell, so I appreciate the recommendation.

Agreed! PSADT really has transformed the way I handle installations.

On your first day, just walk up to the biggest sysadmin you see and, well, just give them a friendly punch! You know, just to assert your dominance. Kidding aside, just be ready to learn and ask questions!
