What are the best backup solutions for a single server?

Hey everyone! I'm on the hunt for a reliable backup solution for a single server that acts as a domain controller, file server, and hosts a few applications. We inherited this setup and plan to separate the roles over time, but for now, I need something that also supports cloud backup. I tried Azure MABS/MARS, but it feels like way too much configuration for what I need. Any recommendations?

For server backup, I highly recommend Datto Siris. It's a local backup appliance that allows you to virtualize your server in case something goes wrong with your hardware. It's air-gapped from your local network and has cloud management features. In the US, backups are safely stored in two separate data centers, and if there's a big disaster, you can virtualize your server in one of those data centers.

We’ve been using a Synology NAS with their Active Backup for Business. It backs up physical devices, VMs on an ESXi host, and even M365 data. It works pretty seamlessly for us!

Yeah, I agree that MARS/MABS is overkill and pretty pricey. We use Veeam to back up our hosts and VMs. It saves everything to an on-site NAS that’s not directly connected to the main rack. That NAS does local backups and also uploads data to a Backblaze bucket. So far, it’s been working well for us. It's affordable and if we need to restore a lot of data, we can even have Backblaze ship it to us, which is surprisingly cheap too!

You might want to check out third-party solutions like BDRSuite that can back up to multiple cloud storage options. For cost-effective and high-performance cloud storage, consider Wasabi Cloud Storage, which has a straightforward pricing structure (no egress fees or API request charges) and is S3 compatible. Backblaze is another great affordable option that works well as a backup target.
