I'm making a transition from networking to DevOps and I'm curious about which positions in this field offer high salaries, specifically around $250k and above. In networking, earning a CCIE certification and working for big vendors like Cisco or Juniper was a fast track to high pay. Are there similar pathways in DevOps? For example, do companies like AWS offer competitive salaries for their in-house DevOps engineers? What kind of skills are most valued in this industry to earn that kind of income? Are there particular vendors or companies that are known for paying well? I feel like certifications might not hold as much weight now, so I'm looking for insight based on real experience.

I haven't checked specific salaries, but I'd wager that Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) roles are among the top earners. You need fantastic skills and a proven history of tackling tough challenges in distributed systems to get there.
To snag one of those high-paying positions, you've gotta have top-notch development skills. Being able to tackle complex coding challenges, like those on Leetcode, quickly is a must.
From what I've seen, salaries reaching that range mostly pop up in high cost of living cities like Seattle and San Francisco. Major players like FAANG definitely pay well. I, for instance, interviewed for a Principal DevOps Engineer role recently; while I'm not quite at $250k yet, my upcoming promotion should push me above that mark.
I've seen that in my current place, a Staff DevOps cap tends to hit around $250k. There are many high-paying jobs available, but competition is fierce!
To really land an impressive salary, you might need to commit to a role long enough to reach a staff or principal level. Often, companies are more willing to take on risks with promotions and pay increases in those positions.
If I could choose any role, I'd aim for a Site Reliability Engineer position at Google. That’s where the big bucks are! But I’m currently on a different path geared towards security.
Almost all the big FAANG companies employ DevOps professionals. For instance, roles like Production Engineer at Meta or Systems Development Engineer at Amazon can offer pretty solid pay. It's definitely worth checking out those opportunities!
