My girlfriend just got a new laptop, but it keeps showing a message that says "Activate Windows." I'm curious about the risks of not activating it. Do I really need to buy a key? And is there a way to just hide that message instead? Thanks for any insights!

Honestly, there's not much risk involved at all if you don't activate Windows. You might find it annoying, but it's not going to break your laptop or anything.
Just keep in mind that the Windows End User License Agreement (EULA) requires activation. So while you won't face immediate dangers, you're technically not complying with Microsoft's rules.
If you want to hide the activation message, your only option is to actually activate Windows. Not activating it won't put your laptop at serious risk, but you'll miss out on some features and customization options, like being able to change your wallpaper.
