What can I do with a stolen iPhone I bought by mistake?

I recently bought an iPhone, but I later found out it was stolen. I've already reported it to the police and the seller has blocked me, so I'm left with this phone that I can't unlock. Is there any way to contact the original owner or unlock it?

I had luck finding the owner of a lost iPhone before. I just tried to guess a contact name, like 'mom' or 'dad', and managed to get Siri to call one of them. But if the phone was reset by the thief, that might not work. You could always turn it into the police, though!

Nope, once it's locked to someone else's iCloud account, there's no way to unlock it without the original owner's credentials. Even Apple can't help with that. Basically, you just bought a very expensive paperweight. This is a good lesson on only buying from reputable sources.

Unfortunately, if the iPhone has an activation lock, it's basically useless to you now. Your best bet is to contact your bank for a chargeback if you paid with a debit or credit card. If you paid cash, you might just be out of luck. Definitely recommend reporting it to the police if you haven't already.
