What CPU cooler should I choose for my 9800X3D build?

I'm getting my PC built next week and collecting the components. I accidentally bought the NZXT Kraken Elite 2023 instead of the 2024 version. I'm wondering if I should stick with the 2023 cooler, upgrade to the 2024 version, or go for a Noctua fan which is significantly cheaper. I'm new to this, so any advice would be appreciated!

NZXT AIOs are pretty pricey for the performance. If you can return it, try out a good Thermalright AIO or even an air cooler—they can compete well without costing as much!

The cooler you're looking at is actually overkill for the 9800X3D. That CPU doesn't need anything too fancy to stay cool, so make sure you're not overspending unnecessarily!

I’d recommend the Peerless Assassin instead! It's a solid cooler that won’t break the bank, and you might be able to invest the savings into other parts of your build. Check it out on PCPartPicker!

If returning the cooler is an option for you, I’d say go for the 2024 version. It’s definitely better, but honestly, if you feel good about going for cheaper Noctua fans, you won’t miss out too much. Better to avoid the 'what if' later!

I have an NZXT Kraken myself, and honestly, I kind of regret going with water cooling. I wish I had chosen air cooling instead. Just don't get stuck in a situation where maintenance becomes a hassle!

Yeah, what specific issues did you run into that made you wish for air cooling?

Why do you regret the Kraken? Was it the cooling performance or something else?
