What CPU Should I Get for My New RTX 4070 to Play at 1440p?

Hey everyone! I'm upgrading my PC after about six years and I'm considering getting a Gainward RTX 4070 Ghost with 12GB. It'll fit in my current setup, but I'm worried my CPU might hold it back. Here's what I've got at the moment: I have an Intel i5-8400 CPU, a Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming 3 motherboard, a Cooler Master Elite V3 600W PSU, and I'm currently using a GTX 1050 Ti. I play games almost every day, and I want a CPU that can handle 1440p gaming without dropping frames, but I'm not interested in 4K at all. Looking for budget-friendly options here, by the way, and since I'm in Europe, I don't have access to microcenters. Thanks in advance for your help!

You can't go wrong with a Ryzen 5 7600 or 7600X. They'll give you great performance at 1440p without breaking the bank!

Definitely grab a Ryzen 7600X or 9600X! They're very popular for good reason. If you're lucky enough to find the 7600X3D, that's even better, but it might be pricier.

These recommendations seem solid! The 7600X3D is a bit more than I want to spend though.

If you want to keep your current motherboard, your choices are pretty limited to older 8th or 9th gen CPUs like the x600 or x700 series. I wouldn't pay much for those though because they'll still bottleneck your performance. Newer CPUs will require a new motherboard and some RAM. You should be able to score a Ryzen 7600X or 9600X for under €200, and adding a motherboard could cost another €100-200.

I figured my mobo wasn’t the best for upgrades but I appreciate the heads up! I’ll be looking into those recommendations.

The Ryzen 7700X or 9600X are solid choices if you're looking for something reliable and robust.

If you're open to upgrading your motherboard and RAM, the Ryzen 7600X or even a 9600X would work perfectly. If you're sticking to your current motherboard, think about the i9-9900K or the i7-9700K instead.

I’d rather not change my mobo if I can help it, but if it limits me too much, I’ll consider it later. Thanks for the dual options!

If you're on a tight budget, try to find a used AM4 motherboard with a Ryzen 5700X3D. If that’s too pricey, you can settle for a 5600. But if you've got a bit more to spend, go for an AM5 motherboard, 16GB of DDR5 RAM at 6000MHz, and a 7600(X) or 9600(X).

Thanks for all the options! The 5600(X) looks affordable, and I’ll check out the boards too. The 7600(X) seems to be the fan favorite!
