What CPU should I upgrade to from my Ryzen 7 5700G for better editing and gaming performance?

Hey everyone! I just started a full-time job as a video editor, but my PC is struggling with the high-res footage I'm working with. I've already upgraded to a GTX 2080, which helped with rendering, but I'm still dealing with frame rate dips during playback on faster footage. I was considering the Ryzen 7 5700X3D, but the benchmarks I've seen are making me question if it's really worth it.

I also game a lot, especially The Finals and Overwatch. I've noticed significant frame drops in The Finals, sometimes down to 70 FPS, which is frustrating since I usually get over 200 FPS in other games. I want to keep grinding in The Finals without these annoying dips!

I'm not looking to overhaul my entire setup, maybe just upgrade my power supply if absolutely necessary (currently at 650W). I'd like to stick to AM4 for compatibility and my budget is around $350 after tax, but I'm open to cheaper options if possible. Thanks for any suggestions!

You might want to consider the Ryzen 9 5900 or 5950. These CPU options are usually cheaper than the X3D variants and can still give you a nice boost in editing performance while slightly lagging in gaming performance compared to the X3D. Plus, they fit better within your budget! That said, if you just need an adequate upgrade to avoid those frame drops, they could be perfect for you.

I upgraded to the Ryzen 7 5700X3D, and it works great for both video editing and gaming! It really helped smooth out those 1% lows in gaming. For video editing, it's solid, but if you can, saving for AM5 might be the way to go for longer-term performance. Just a heads up though, I initially made a rookie mistake by using HDDs for my raw and project files, which caused playback issues. Switching to an NVMe made a huge difference, even for 4K footage!
