Hey everyone! I'm looking to set up my first NAS and would love your thoughts. Currently, I have an old Dell Optiplex 7010 that I'm using as a server to run Jellyfin and WireGuard VPN. Now, I'm planning to add a NAS mainly for storage and installing Proxmox to explore VMs and learn. Here's what I'm thinking for my build:
- **CPU**: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G 3.9 GHz 6-Core Processor
- **Motherboard**: ASRock B550M Pro RS Micro ATX AM4

I'm considering Debian as the OS instead of Ubuntu, thinking of using RAID 6, and I'm still figuring out backup solutions. Any insights or suggestions on this setup?

I recommend going with an Intel i5-12400 instead of the 5600G. The Ryzen can draw more power (around 30W idle) while Intel can go as low as 13-15W, which is great for a NAS that runs 24/7. You might also save watts by switching to DDR5 RAM. As for the PSU, a 450W Be Quiet Pure Power is an excellent pick. For storage, consider booting from an NVMe SSD for speed. Also, did you know you can often find 4TB Seagate IronWolf drives at the same price as those WD Reds? They’re just as good and you might want to look into RAID 5 if you're not at crazy capacities yet. Good luck!
