What does it mean when passkeys ask for a USB connection?

I opened the Discord app and tried to log in using a passkey, but it prompted me to insert a USB device to continue. I'm wondering if this means a USB device is already set up for my account, or if it's just suggesting that I could use one. If I already had a passkey on my computer, wouldn't it just ask for that instead of a USB device?

When it mentions using a USB device, it's indicating that it supports USB passkeys, which means you would typically need something like a YubiKey or a compatible smartphone. You should be able to check if any passkeys are registered with Windows Hello, but it sounds like it's just offering you the USB option rather than confirming it's already set up.

Yeah, the key phrase there is 'as an alternative.' It's letting you know that USB passkeys are supported. If you haven't set one up yet, it may be prompting you to do that now. If you had a passkey associated with your account, it would usually ask for that instead of making you use a USB key.
