What Fun IT Challenges Can We Set Up in an Empty Building?

We're working with an empty building that has a live circuit and a complete network setup. Our goal is to create fun challenges for the team that will also help newer members learn. We've got some basic ideas on the board, including a network loop, rogue DHCP, and a rogue firewall installation on the ceiling. But I'm curious if anyone has other creative challenge ideas! We also have clients, phones, and a heap of other infrastructure we could utilize. What are your best suggestions?

You might also want to run a challenge with hidden files. Post a Wi-Fi password for an access point somewhere secret, have them find it, connect, and then try to uncover clues hidden within that network. It could lead them to an actual prize if done right, and it’s a great way to encourage problem-solving!

I love that idea! Engaging a competitive spirit with prizes really gets people into it.

That's clever! Hiding a flag behind layers of challenges builds excitement.

Sounds like a blast! You could hide a wireless router to create some rogue access points. When the team connects their personal devices, it latches onto a different DHCP range, causing all sorts of connectivity issues. You could even set up an old switch without auto-sensing ports and have them figure out how to set up a crossover cable for it. Those kind of issues really test their network skills!

Those rogue APs are such a pain! It's like a game of hide and seek with the network.

Right? Users bringing their own routers can really complicate things.

Definitely consider messing with the DNS settings; everyone knows that DNS issues can cause major headaches. Also, you could set up basic issues like broken ethernet cables that they’ll need to trace and fix. That’s a great way to test troubleshooting skills in real-time!

True, and let's not forget VLAN configuration issues, that can really stump teams.

DNS issues are classic; they get people every time!

Why not switch things up a bit and introduce some physical fun? Since it's a spacious empty building, how about a LAN party combined with a Nerf gun battle? Get a bunch of folks playing games while dodging foam darts—talk about team building!

I'm all for a Nerf battle! That sounds like a fantastic way to channel some competitive energy.

Totally! It’s a great stress reliever and a chance to bond with the team.
